1pm-2pm: Erik Knudsen: The Meaning of Independence

Erik Knudsen is a filmmaker, photographer and Professor of Media Practice at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in the UK. Erik runs film workshops across the world developing cinematic stories, including at the renowned Escuela International de Cine y Television in Cuba. He also runs a small film production company, One Day Films. Starting his film career on celluloid over 30 years ago, Erik has since embraced the digital revolution in the moving image and has been working with digital formats since 2001.

The arrival of highly video-capable DSLRs in 2009, led to a new level of expansion of independent filmmaking across the world and Erik has embraced these camera developments and credits them for rekindling his interest in developing both photography and filmmaking as an integrated creative practice. His forthcoming feature film, Cleft Lip, was shot on a Leica SL which he also uses for his stills photography.

From the personal perspective of an independent filmmaker, Erik will talk about the democratisation of narrative filmmaking and distribution brought about by the DSLR revolution and will examine the impact that this digital revolution is having on film industries, globally. He will show clips from his work, both cinematic and photographic, and will explore the challenges and opportunities that face the independent filmmaker and photographer in an age of complexity and abundance.
